St Philips Christian College-New Middle School Building
This was the construction of a building which could accommodate up to 340 students in years five to eight and includes the following functional areas:
- Thirteen classrooms
- A Computer lab and Drama/Creative arts space
- Public reception area with adjacent staff and administration areas
- Student amenities on each floor
- Courtyards and balconies off each classroom
The Middle School Building is of two-storey cavity brick construction with concrete floors and metal roofing. It has a combination of red brick external walls with split-faced, sandstone coloured concrete blockwork panels and grey corrugated metal cladding.
The floor plan steps along its length, which visually separates the form into three adjoining blocks. This, with the strategic use of external materials, reduces the bulk and mass of the building so that it is in keeping with the scale of the surrounding residential area.
The new facilities are modern and functional, employing passive solar design principles which utilise natural light and ventilation. The main orientation of the building is east-west in order to maximise northern exposure to the learning spaces. The north and south halves of the building are separated by a low-roofed circulation spine which runs-east-west. This enables classrooms on the south side of the building to have north-facing high level windows.
