Wyong Hospital Drug Treatment Centre

The building has been designed as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centre to house both calming Inpatient Unit for Drug and Alcohol treatment and an Outpatients Unit for Methadone Treatment, in a non-institutional and welcoming environment. Built on the existing Wyong Hospital site, the building was designed as a separate entity with its own car parking and entries, yet is serviced by the Main Hospital through a new Glazed link. The functional planning required that within one building, the Inpatient Unit and Outpatient Unit be separate with some shared services.

The Building was designed to cater for the functional needs with the use of a curved feature rendered wall and glazed roof that forms the spine through the new building, and houses the mechanical exhaust. Curved white colourbond roofing with timber trusses related to the existing Hospital massing and conceals the main plant room with external concrete block facade using random pattern split smooth faced blocks. Glazing is a combination of punched openings and fully glazed sections with infill CFC panels.

Single story construction based on a concrete raft slab, structural steel support for an internal plant room concealed within the roof space, timber wall frames with a veneer of random pattern split/smooth face blocks a curved roof. The project required detailing of external and internal finishes that were durable, easy to maintain and designed to reduce the risk of self harm by patients. Landscaping that is functional, appealing and durable with a low budget.
